Western Psychology
To begin looking through the graduate programs in Psychology that Western offers, click on the Graduate link at the top of the Psychology homepage (linked to the left) or click here. Make sure to read the information for prospective applicants, and know the deadlines for the awards early. The graduate links quick list will help you search out programs at other universities, so be sure to check it out as well!
Faculty of Graduate Studies
The Graduate Studies website contains information on all of the graduate programs offered at Western. For a direct link to the list of graduate programs available at Western, click here. Application deadlines are usually in January or February.
Graduate Record Examinations
This link will bring you to the homepage of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). For many graduate programs in psychology, the GRE general test and GRE subject test in psychology are required, so make sure to know what is needed for your application and take the tests early! The best time to do the General is shortly after July 10th before your fourth year, and the best time to take the Pscyhology test is in April of your third year.
Canadian Psychological Association
The Canadian Psychological Association has a listing of all Canadian universities with accredited psychology programs and has direct links to the psychology department of each. Use this resource to search for all of the programs available in psychology in Canada. Click here for a direct link to the listings. Application deadlines are usually in January or February.
Ontario Graduate Scholarship
The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities offers the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) to individuals in any graduate program, so apply for this scholarship early if you plan to continue into grad school. Once you have applied to this one, be sure to apply to one of the three research councils below. Click here for the application procedures for the OGS. Apply by October of your final year to ensure you meet the deadlines.
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada
For many psychology programs, especially research oriented non-clinical ones, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) offers funding at the Masters and PhD levels. Click here for information on the first year Master's level of funding, apply early!
Canadian Institutes of Health Research
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) offers funding for a variety of health research areas, including human development and neuroscience.
Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada
The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) will fund scientific research in psychology, which generally entails programs that will lead to a MSc or PhD in psychology. Click here for information on Master's level funding.
The University Students' Council at The University of Western Ontario is the most comprehensive student government in Canada. As the leading undergraduate organization on campus, their focus is threefold: to facilitate social programming, provide political advocacy, and operate services that are assets to a student's daily needs. Google Scholar
Google Scholar is a search engine designed for students and researchers. It catalogues many, if not most, journal articles. This link allows you to access Google Scholar through the UWO proxy server (UWO username and password required), which in turn gives you full access to the articles you find. Finding primary resources has never been easier.
This website gives a good overview of the different areas in psychology, as well as the main focus of each. For any students looking to work in the UK or obtain their advanced training there, this website is a valuable tool. It gives information on working in the UK with a psychology degree from abroad and the general requirements for working as a psychologist in the EU. For those not looking to work in the UK, some information is also given about specific career options in psychology and its related fields.
